Port/Harbor Currents - Vessel Traffic System
[IV-A]
I want to make measurements in ports and harbors... [change]
...specifically, to measure currents as part of a VTS. [change]
SonTek/YSI Acoustic
Doppler Profilers (ADPs) have been incorporated as part of Vessel Traffic
System (VTS) projects in ports as diverse as San Francisco and Qatar. For ADPs in port,
the most important factor is range. The ADP is available in five frequencies, with nominal
ranges of 6, 25, 40, 90, and 160 m. These are the expected "medium" ranges
under typical conditions. In some cases the range will be less, in others more.
Typically, ADPs in ports are deployed on the bottom with a cable for real-time
monitoring. On occasion, a side-looking ADP on a bridge piling can provide the necessary
information while avoiding the costly maintenance of bottom-mounted systems. Real-time
cabling to ADPs can be as long as 1500 m.
There is a complete suite of Windows-based software for the ADPs, including
post-processing and three different application-specific data acquisition programs.
Any ADP can be configured with
a variety of external sensors, including pressure, conductivity, temperature, turbidity,
pollution, etc.
