The SonTek 16-MHz MicroADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter) is the most significant breakthrough in 3-axis (3D) current meter technology since the original SonTek ADV. The original SonTek ADV has compared favorably with Laser systems costing ten times as much — the MicroADV fares even better. The higher acoustical frequency of 16 MHz makes the MicroADV the optimal instrument for laboratory work. Like all SonTek instruments, the MicroADV is extremely simple to set up and use. Most users are taking high-quality data within minutes of receiving the system.

Flow Field Mapping Using an ADV
This SonTek/YSI Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) is being used in a laboratory to map the flow field around a dredge head. The ADV measures velocities at up to 25 Hz in a sampling volume smaller than 0.25 cubic centimeters, so intricate flow fields can be mapped by physically moving the probe. The dye was injected during the experiment as a visual indicator of the flow field.
Model Basin Wave Studies
Each yellow pylon on this walkway (top) supports an individual Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). This large-model basin at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Mississippi, is designed for the study of currents generated by a wavefield with angled incidence on a model beach.
Wave Flume Measurements
This ADV is being used to study the orbital velocities of a wave field within a flume. The sensor head is mounted to look "sideways", that is, it is perpendicular to the stem (see highlighted box in figure). This places the measurement volume 5 cm away from the stem, minimizing the potential for the vertical velocities to advect the probe wake into the measurements.
