SonTek Celebrates Founders Day
and Expanded Capacity
September 16, 2002, San Diego, California
– An open house for over one hundred guests, consisting of
customers, suppliers, and employees' family members, marked the occasion of
SonTek's ten-year anniversary on August 9. Also being celebrated was the
expansion of the SonTek facility located in the Carroll Ridge Business Park.
 The
expansion adds 10,000 square feet to the operations and research and development
capacity of this manufacturer of acoustic Doppler technology used to measure
water velocity and flow. SonTek was founded as a partnership and opened its
doors on Silverton Avenue in 1992. Former president and co-founder Ramon Cabrera
attended and participated in the festivities.
SonTek was purchased last July by YSI Incorporated, a Yellow
Springs, Ohio-based sensor technology company, to expand its water quality
measurement and monitoring Environmental business unit. Cabrera, still active as
a technical consultant to SonTek, reflected on today's fete. He commented that
"it was a difficult decision to sell the business, but I knew that the fit with
YSI would be a good one and would position the SonTek business to achieve the
growth this staff is capable of. YSI's commitment to this business and the
people is reflected in its investment in enlarging and improving this space,
which comes at a significant time as we celebrate our tenth year."
Ms. Gayle Rominger, Sr. VP and General Manager of YSI
Environmental, noted that "both SonTek and YSI Environmental are realizing
synergies across multiple functions as we leverage technology, sales, and
marketing efforts. For example, the Endeco [Marion, Massachusetts] systems
integration business is now representing the SonTek product line in the Eastern
US. And our offices in Europe and Asia have also added SonTek specialists to
enhance our efforts in these international markets. We are in a unique position
to offer the marketplace a one-stop shop for both water quality and water
velocity and flow needs."
Other YSI Incorporated executive staff attending the open
house included Malte vonMatthiessen, CEO, and Rosalie Catalano, VP Stewardship
and Human Development. YSI, an employee-owned company founded in 1948, also has
two other business units in addition to YSI Environmental—YSI Temperature and
YSI Life Sciences.
