Argonaut-MD Current Meters
Used Worldwide for Deep-Water Oceanographic Research

Argonaut-MD (titanium)San Diego, California, March 9, 2004SonTek/YSI (San Diego) and OSIL (Petersfield, UK) recently supplied over 20 deep-water titanium Argonaut-MD current meters to various research institutions world-wide, including Scripps Institution of Oceanography (USA) and Southampton Oceanography Centre (U.K.).

According to SonTek's, Chris Ward, "Most of the MDs will be used in their primary role of mooring-line deployed current meters in conditions ranging from the cold waters of the Labrador Sea to the clear waters of the equatorial Atlantic. A less typical role will see the MD used to monitor deep, near-bottom velocities at a prototype Neptune project site."

The titanium Argonaut-MD provides a combination of accurate velocity measurement and high sensitivity in low backscatter environments in an easy to operate package. First developed in 1996, the Argonaut-MD went through many technical improvements in 2003. The use of larger diameter transducers, combined with electronic improvements, allows the MD to operate within the most demanding low backscatter regions of the oceans. Most important is that this increased signal strength did not come with any sacrifice in the deployment time.
