ADV Family of Products
Since the original invention of the 10-MHz ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter) by
SonTek, the ADV has developed into a family of products appealing to a broad range of
applications. With ADV models available in three acoustic frequencies, and with its
multi-sensor and integration capabilities, ADVs are more diverse and capable today than
ever before. Just during the past couple of years, there have been several major additions
and improvements to the ADV product line, including:
- Increased sensitivity
- Improved amplitude measurement accuracy
- Integration with a wide variety of sensors
- A smaller Delrin housing that reduces flow disturbances
- An increased variety of probes for special applications
- Underwater connector on probe housing is now standard
- RS-485 capability
Typical ADV Applications |
- Low Flows
- Turbulence
- Small-scale structures
- Boundary layer
- Acoustic altimetry
- Coastal oceanography
- Open-channel flow
- Flow-field mapping
- Sediment transport
- Water treatment
- High-precision, single-point measurements
|
Whether your application is in the laboratory, the ocean, or a river or
stream, there is an ADV configuration to suit your needs.
Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter Family of Products

10-MHz ADVField
|
- The 10-MHz ADV Field Probe has been made stronger and more durable for outdoor
use in rivers, streams, and water treatment applications.
- A new underwater connector greatly facilitates probe change-outs in Field or Lab units.
- Our SonLink protocol allows multiple ADV Field systems to be controlled and
synchronized via RS-485.

ADV Probes
|
- (Left) - The 5-cm laboratory probes can be used with 16-MHz MicroADVs and 10-MHz ADVs.
- (Middle) - The ruggedized 10-cm field probe for 10-MHz ADVs.
- (Right) - The sturdy 18-cm, 5-MHz ADV Ocean Probe is ready to withstand the abuse
of pounding waves in the surf zone.

FlowTracker
Handheld ADV
|
- Designed with the field user in mind, the FlowTracker easily attaches to
top-setting wading rods for use in streams and a variety of shallow-water, open-channel environments.
- Features an automatic discharge algorithm that is used by the U.S. Geological Survey.
- Keypad interface with real-time velocity display.
- No external batteries or computer required for data collection.
- Laboratory-proven ADV Doppler technology - up to 15 times better than
electromagnetic flowmeters. Capable of measuring velocities down to 0.001 m/s
(0.003 ft/s) and in water as shallow as 2 cm (~1 inch).
- 2D/3D current measurement

Hydra w/ 5-MHz ADVOcean
|
- Integrated compass/tilt, temperature, and pressure sensors can be mounted
directly on the conditioning module to facilitate field deployments.
- Using our Hydra with third-party sensor integration (CTD, turbidity, etc.) allows
the ADV to become the center-pin of multi-instrument suites for near-shore and coastal
oceanographic applications.
