  The first Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) was introduced to the scientific world by SonTek in 1993. It was used primarily in lab environments for controlled studies requiring highly precise single point water velocity data.

Over the years, the ADV family of instruments grew, as well as the locations in which they were being used. Today, while you can still find ADV’s as a standard part of any university hydraulic lab arsenal, you can also find systems actively being used for coastal wave studies, estuarine research and river/stream flow modelling.

Introduction to GPS Positioning for RiverSurveyor Stationary Live Measurements

  The RiverSurveyor-M9 can be used for both the Moving Boat or Stationary discharge measurements. The stationary measurement method applies the velocity area method using either the Mid-Section or Mean-Section methods for discharge calculations. The measurement of the water depth and velocity profile at individual stations has greatly improved since the introduction of Acoustic Doppler Instruments. SonTek has gone one step further by implementing GPS in RiverSurveyor Stationary Live software to determine the station locations from GPS positioning. This method improves the measurements process, efficiency and accuracy from the traditional measuring tape or tagline methods.

RiverSurveyor-M9 on the Ebro River – Zaragoza, Spain

  This drone video features one of two transects undertaken by the RiverSurveyor-M9. The demonstration was part of a SonTek workshop. Attendees included SAIH Guadiana, SAIH Jucar, SAIH Ebro, and the Navarra Region Government. The Q was well within monitoring agencies’ 5% acceptance level. The river gauging station and control room is managed by the Confederacion Hidrografica del Ebro.
