10-MHz ADV in the Lab or Field

10-MHz ADV

10-MHz ADV

The SonTek/YSI 10-MHz ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter) is a proven, accurate solution for high-precision, 3-axis (3D), velocity measurements in a wide variety of settings from the laboratory to the ocean. ADV performance has been shown to compare favorably with laser Doppler systems costing ten times as much. In addition, the ADV is extremely simple to set up and use. Most users are taking high quality data within minutes of receiving the system.

High-Resolution Field Measurements in Clam Pens
The Marine Resources Research Institute in Charleston, South Carolina, is measuring the flows of water in clam pens, and in the aisles between the pens, using a SonTek/YSI field ADV. When results were compared with a control location (far away from the clam pens), it was discovered that the vertical velocity was reduced by half in the aisles between the pens, and by 90 percent within the pens themselves. This is a major consideration as the pens will significantly reduce the total food particle flux to the clams, and consequently, their growth.

Undersea Channels Studied to Aid Oil Recovery
Located in MIT's Experimental Sedimentology and Geomorphology Lab, this study involves the use of SonTek ADVs and a SonTek PC-ADP to measure high-velocity data from an MIT sedimentation tank. The main objective of this study is to maximize recovery from oil and gas wells by understanding how sediments are deposited. Work in an MIT lab may help energy companies withdraw millions of additional barrels of oil from beneath the sea floor. (Photos courtesy of MIT.)
